Fall Break (October 5-October 9) Library Hours

The Library will have reduced hours during Fall Break.

Wednesday, October 5 - 8 a.m to 8 p.m.
Thursday, October 6 - 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday, October 7 - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, October 8 - CLOSED
Sunday, October 9 - Open 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Remember, you can always check the Library's Hours page on our web site to see when we are open and closed.

Does your little brother need an article for his high school paper? Are your parents interested in researching marketing ideas for their business? Then you should tell your family members how they can access and use more than 50 databases that you currently have access to through the Muskingum College Library and OhioLINK web sites. You can direct your family members to the Ohio Web Library, a core collection of electronic research resources provided to all Ohio residents by Libraries Connect Ohio, a collaborative effort of Ohio's library organizations.

Two new Web sites describe this state-wide effort. The first, www.ohioweblibrary.org, provides a list of available resources and background information about the Ohio Web Library. It also provides a gateway to help Ohioans connect to the electronic resources via INFOhio, OhioLINK, OPLIN and the State Library of Ohio. The second site, www.librariesconnectohio.org, provides detailed information on the way Ohio's libraries and library organizations are working together to provide valuable resources to Ohioans.

Banned Books on the Quad...match the reason to the book for a chance to win!

Three ways YOU can celebrate Banned Book Week 2005 at Muskingum...

1. Come and listen to faculty, staff, and students read from a banned or challenged book of their choice.*

2. Enter our contest and try to match the reason for the challenge with the title of the book. Those entries with three (or fewer) mistakes will be entered into a random drawing. The person selected will get to choose one title from a list of banned/challenged books. Entry forms will be distributed on the Quad during the readings and available in the Library. Complete entries may be turned in at the Library's Circulation Desk or Reference Desk.

3. Check-out the Banned Book display in the Library for the first time or the last time before we take it down at the end of the week.

The Library will be offering an hour long training on Thursday, September 29 from 3 to 4 p.m. in 204 Boyd Science Center. PsychINFO and other key psychology resources will be discussed. You will have the opportunity to follow along trying searches using the lab computers. All interested students, faculty, and staff are invited.

September 17 is Constitution Day.
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
The National Archives has created a web site that includes a high quality image of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In addition, the National Archive site provides extensive biographical information on the 39 delegates who signed the Constitution on September 17, 1787.

Another great resource for learning about the Constitution, the Federalist papers, debate on Constitutional issues, and government power is available from CQ Research In Context.

Of course, what would Constitution Day be without School House Rock's "Preamble"?

OhioLINK and Muskingum Offer Additional Renewals

Now It's Possible to Keep OhioLINK Books for Up to Fifteen Weeks

Students, faculty and staff at Muskingum College and across Ohio can now keep the books they borrow from other OhioLINK libraries for up to 15 weeks, as long as another user has not requested the materials. In addition, undergraduates may keep Muskingum owned books for up to 15 weeks.

"Users statewide have been asking to keep OhioLINK books longer than six weeks," Tony Maniaci, chair of OhioLINK'’s Inter-Campus Services Committee, which sets OhioLINK borrowing policies, said. "But OhioLINK has to carefully balance the needs of researchers who wish to keep an item for an extended period of time with those who have short time frames to meet a deadline or complete a class assignment. Recent improvements to the software used for online borrowing checks for holds before allowing a renewal. This new functionality allows us to extend the maximum borrowing period for items and better meet the needs of all OhioLINK users."

OhioLINK books may be checked out for three weeks and renewed up to four times, as long as another user has not placed a hold on the item, for a total maximum borrowing period of 15 weeks. In addition, Muskingum undergraduates can also check out a Muskingum owned book for three weeks and renew it up to four times, as long as another user has not placed a hold on the item. You can request and renew OhioLINK books and local library materials online via the library's Web site at http://www.muskingum.edu/home/library/.

The OhioLINK Library Catalog contains more than 9.6 million unique library items, 58% of which are only available at one of the 85 OhioLINK libraries. Users can request to pick up books at Muskingum College Library, or any other participating OhioLINK library. Books are usually delivered in just two to three days. There is no charge for Muskingum students, faculty and staff to request OhioLINK books, but late fees are charged for items kept past the due date.
